Maybe stay away from this one, folks... Pretty sure boinking a corpse isn't on anyone's to-do list. At least he's a fierce corpse though! (/finger snaps) We'd say he couldn't hurt a fly, but that would be a blatant lie. Maybe instead, we'll say he is incredibly unlikely to hurt a fly, unless that fly tried to murder his friends or family. Basically, don't get on his bad side or he'll pummell your bones to gravel! From childhood, Wen Ning was always weak and sickly, forced to depend on other people to take care of him. For the most part, the person he relied on was his sister, Wen Qing. She was trained in medicine, and so was able to take care of his physical ailments throughout their formative years. In return, Wen Ning dedicated himself to helping his sister whenever possible, serving as her assistant and supporting her through all her endeavors.

When Wen Ning first met Wei Wuxian, during their period studying with the Gusu Lan Sect at Cloud Recesses, he was instantly taken by Wei Wuxian's charm and confidence. Wei Wuxian showed him kindness, while most people looked down on him or resented him for his connections to the ~~evil~~ spiteful Qishan Wen Clan. Later, when Wei Wuxian was in trouble during the Discussion Conference in Qishan, badly beaten, injured and locked in a cell with a giant monstrous dog, Wen Ning rushed to his aid, tranquilizing the dog and giving Wei Wuxian medicine to help heal his wounds. He knew if anyone found out, he would be punished for helping the Wen Clan's enemy, but his devotion to Wei Wuxian outweighed all the risks.

Later, when he hears of the slaughter of the Jiang Clan, Wen Ning rushes to Yunmeng to help Wei Wuxian again. It is thanks to his quick thinking and ingenuity that they are able to drug the Wen clan revelers and escape with the wounded Jiang Cheng and the deceased bodies of Jiang Fengmian and Lady Yu. Once again, Wen Ning looked beyond clan ties to be loyal to the man who had helped him before in his own time of need. He brought Wei Wuxian and his siblings to Yiling, where Wen Qing was serving in the Supervisory Office on the behalf of the invading Wen Clan. He put his sister in a difficult position, where she had to choose between her brother's personal loyalties and her reputation in the clan which had given them sanctuary as children. Ultimately, she decides to help heal Jiang Cheng, putting herself and Wen Ning at incredible risk. Wen Ning was grateful to his sister for taking care of him and his friends, as always.

In order to restore Jiang Cheng's inner power, which had been decimated in the attack at Yunmeng, Wen Ning and Wei Wuxian assisted Wen Qing in a dangerous procedure which transferred Wei Wuxian's golden core into Jiang Cheng's body. Wei Wuxian kept Jiang Cheng in the dark about the particulars of the procedure, and swore Wen Qing and Wen Ning to secrecy, knowing if Jiang Cheng knew the truth it would shatter him. Of course, being the unfalteringly loyal friend that he is, Wen Ning swore to keep the secret.

After the procedure, the group parts ways, with Wei Wuxian being captured by the Wen Clan and stranded in the haunted area known as the Burial Mounds. During these events and those that followed, not much is known about what Wen Ning and Wen Qing were up to. Throughout the course of a war in which the other four clans united to fight against the Wen Clan and the undead puppets used as footsoldiers by the dark magic using leader of the Wen Clan, Wen Ruohan, eventually Wen Ruohan was killed and the Wen Clan was punished for their crimes, with the majority of them killed and the remaining survivors locked up in a prison camp run by the Jin clan and tortured for their crimes. Wen Ning was among the cultivators locked up in the Qiongqi Path prison camp, and was beaten mercilessly and left for dead. When Wen Qing finally led Wei Wuxian to the camp in an attempt to rescue her brother, he was on the verge of death, with only one breath left in his body. In order to save his life, Wei Wuxian used Demonic Cultivation to bring him back as a fierce corpse. He enacted revenge on the guards who had beaten him and his family members, and then Wei Wuxian led all the surviving Wen Clan members back to the Burial Mounds, where they lived in peace away from the rest of the world.

Unlike other fierce corpses, Wen Ning retained his mind and sense of self. He was able to think, speak, and feel pain. By all accounts, he was a normal human being, just... deathly pale with telltale black marks on his neck marking him as a fierce corpse. For the most part, they lived a simple life, growing vegetables, eating together like a family, and trying to sell their produce at market to earn a meager living. This was possibly the happiest period of Wen Ning's life. Despite his personal circumstances, he was surrounded by his family and friends, and was able to help and protect them, allowing him to feel useful and needed. He even had a child to help take care of, the young and rambunctious toddler named Yuan, the child of Wen Ning's cousin.

This all changed when Wei Wuxian was invited to his sister's infant child's one month celebration. Wen Ning accompanied him on the journey to act as a bodyguard, and it's a good thing, too, because they were ambushed at Qiongqi Path by Jin Zixun and dozens of other disciples from many of the remaining clans. Wei Wuxian began playing his special music which unlocked Wen Ning's fierce corpse strength. He fought off the various disciples while Wei Wuxian spoke with Jin Zixun and, once he arrived on scene, Jin Zixuan. Things took a quick turn for the worse, however, when another flute started playing, taking over control of Wen Ning and directing him to kill both Jin Zixuan and Jin Zixun. Horrified, Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning fled back to the Burial Mounds.

Accepting guilt for the massacre, Wen Qing and Wen Ning and the rest of the Wen Clan remnants decided to turn themselves in to the Jin clan for retribution. The happiest time of Wen Ning's life was officially over. Nearly everyone he'd ever loved were sending themselves to their deaths. Feeling guilty for losing control and causing this whole problem, Wen Ning was resigned to die alongside them.

Things weren't going to be so easy, though. While the Jin Clan did kill the remaining Wens, cremating Wen Qing and hanging the rest, they saw the potential of having a weapon like Wen Ning at their beck and call, and imprisoned him instead, driving spikes into his brain to render him a puppet. From the best time in his life, to the worst. He lived a pitiful existence for over a decade and a half, confined to a dark room with his only company being the people they would send to check on him and make sure he wasn't dead.

Things looked bleak, until sixteen years later, when Mo Xuanyu gave his life to resurrect the dead Wei Wuxian. One day, Wen Ning heard the call of Wei Wuxian's flute, and rushed off to help his old friend and master. He still had minimal control over his mind and body, but he was useful as a weapon, fighting off a demonic statue and rescuing Wei Wuxian and a band of young cultivators. Knowing that the juniors were afraid of Wen Ning and would likely attack him, Wei Wuxian played a new tune to soothe his mind before sending him away.

Now that he knew his friend was alive again, though, Wen Ning was not about to abandon Wei Wuxian. He followed him, and followed him, persistently until Wei Wuxian was able to remove the spikes in his brain which were limiting his mental capabilities. Even once Lan Wangji sent Wen Ning away, he still folloed them, coming to Wei Wuxian's aid in Yi City, and once again following him through the woods until he was discovered.

Together with Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, Wen Ning went back to the Burial Mounds, where they found the junior disciples tied up, being used as bait to lure in an army of fierce corpses. Wen Ning, under Wei Wuxian's direction, freed them, then set to defending the group from the oncoming attack. The Burial Mounds was besieged by a band of cultivators from every remaining clan, under the impression that it was Wei Wuxian who had captured their juniors and used them as bait. Wei Wuxian was able to prove, however, that it was instead Su She who had tricked them all, and stripped all the adult cultivators of their spiritual energy, rendering them helpless in the fight against the oncoming hordes of fierce corpses.

Wen Ning, Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji, and one or two of the juniors fought to hold off the fierce corpses until the rest of the group could escape, and they decided to regroup in Yunmeng, at Lotus Pier. Before they departed, Wen Ning approached one of the Lan Clan juniors, Lan Sizhui, who bore a striking resemblance to one of his departed cousins. Once he learned that his birth name was Lan Yuan, Wen Ning confirmed that he was in fact little Yuan from the Burial Mounds, who had been rescued by Lan Wangji and raised as one of his own. When the party arrived at Lotus Pier, Wen Ning could sense that Jiang Sect leader Jiang Cheng did not want him inside, so he agreed to wait on the docks. Lan Sizhui kept him company, and the two reminisced about their time living together during Yuan's childhood, which he had trouble remembering.

Wen Ning was soon needed, however, when Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian got into a physical confrontation. He swooped in, standing up to Jiang Cheng and asking him to unsheathe Wei Wuxian's sword, which had sealed itself when he died. When Jiang Cheng was able to draw the weapon, Wen Ning finally broke the silence on the secret he had kept for over sixteen years, explaining that the sword allowed itself to be drawn because it recognized Wei Wuxian's golden core inside Jiang Cheng. While Jiang Cheng came to grips with learning the truth, he and Lan Wangji fled with an unconscious Wei Wuxian. Wen Ning asked Lan Wangji not to tell Wei Wuxian that he had shared his secret, and broken his oath.

Later, during the final showdown at Guanyin Temple, Wen Ning battled with the sword spirit of Nie Mingjue, preventing it from using him to hurt the young Jin Ling (the son of Jin Zixuan, who Wen Ning had killed all those years ago). He didn't contribute a whole lot to the rest of the encounter, but his bravery convinced Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng that Wen Ning was good, and should not be resented for his role in their family members' deaths.

In the aftermath, Wen Ning and Lan Sizhui decided to travel back to Qishan to erect a cenotaph memorial for the fallen Wen Clan. After that, he decided to find his own way in the world for once, feeling that he had followed Wei Wuxian for long enough. He ended up living in the forests surrounding Cloud Recesses, helping Lan Sizhui and the other juniors on their night hunts.

At one point some time later, Wen Ning and Lan Sizhui reunited in the town of Fufeng, which had been plagued by ghosts stealing people's souls. The pair of them investigated and solved the mystery, punishing the necromancer Zhao Yi and imprisoning him for life so he could repent for his crimes. During this encounter, Wen Ning had visions of himself being restrained by chains, taunted by a spectral version of himself for feeling guilt over his status as a fierce corpse. He eventually was able to break free, thanks to an appearance by Wei Wuxian in his visions, convincing him to believe in himself and his power to do good. Through this, he was able to fully tap into his power and defeat Zhao Yi.

Personality:

Loyalty – Wen Ning's core personality revolves around his loyalty, first to his sister, and later to Wei Wuxian. He feels a personal responsibility to repay the kindness that is shown to him, no matter the cost to himself.
Guilt – As the Ghost General, Wen Ning is responsible for many deaths, some he meant to commit, some he did not. Some were unintended consequences of events that were out of his control. He still feels the weight of all that loss, and sees the blood on his hands every time he self reflects. He strives to do what he can to make up for his past misdeeds, to right the wrongs he committed, even though they weren't all his fault.
Innocence – Wen Ning can be, perhaps to a fault, rather naive. He's grown out of this for the most part by the time he reaches his current canon point, but for a long time, he believed the best in people, regardless of their actions that may speak otherwise, and was easily taken advantage of for this fact. He is bullied in the streets on multiple occasions, not only by full grown men, but by a group of children as well. As afraid as people are of "The Great And Fearsome Ghost General," regular old Wen Ning still makes for an easy target.
Shyness – Due to his ill health in his early life, Wen Ning was a loner, and had difficulty making friends. Much of the cultivation world looked down on him, and so he withdrew into himself and had trouble reaching out.
Longing for connection – That isn't to say that he didn't want to make friends. He desperately did, which is part of why he latched so hard onto Wei Wuxian, the first person outside of his immediate family to show him any kindness or praise. Later, after he has lived for a decade and a half with the knowledge that his entire family was killed, when he is given the hope that little Yuan survived, and is now living as a junior cultivator of the Lan Clan, he overcomes his shyness to reach out to Lan Sizhui and rebuild that connection that he had lost.
Weakness – As mentioned above, much of the cultivation world looked down on Wen Ning, due to his physical and spiritual weakness, and the low level of his golden core's power. This prevented him from developing his full potential as a cultivator, but he was just glad to be included, even if he couldn't participate fully.
Strength – After being revived as a fierce corpse, Wen Ning is much stronger, both physically, mentally, and emotionally. Sure, he still acts like an innocent little puppy dog, but he has the fortitude of will to stand up and protect his friends from harm. Not to mention, he can literally lift boulders now. He's that strong.

Key themes: Loyalty to those who show kindness to you, over the loyalty of what amounts to political affiliation. Repenting for the crimes you have committed, even though you weren't under your own control when you committed them. Embracing yourself for who you are, even if who you are is a mostly undead living weapon.

Main Motivation: Righting wrongs, and making up for his past misdeeds.

Skills: Being a fierce corpse, Wen Ning no longer has access to his golden core for the practice of normal cultivation. Instead, he is strengthened by the resentful energy which resides in him, granting him superhuman strength and resilience. He can:

Lift a many ton boulder over his head and move it where he wants it to go.
Leap several stories into the air and deliver acrobatic flying kicks with ease.
Move supernaturally fast to dodge attacks.
Catch an arrow out of thin air before it hits its target.
Take on large groups in combat singlehandedly.
Have a sort of telepathic control over the chains he adorns himself with, able to imbue them with spiritual energy and use them as a whiplike weapon.
Withstand pain, fire, cold, and poison. (He still feels pain, but he is able to keep it from showing on his face.)

He also is a skilled archer, and picked up some knowledge of medicine from his sister Wen Qing, which was what allowed him to drug the Wen Clan guards in Yunmeng after their siege on Lotus Pier.

He further demonstrated his medical knowledge by drugging the Qishan Wen Sect members to sleep in order to free Jiang Cheng at Lotus Pier. ▐ Sentient Fierce Corpse: As a result of Wei Wuxian's Demonic Cultivation, Wen Ning was the first known sentient Fierce Corpse. His strength far exceeded an ordinary human's, enabling him to lift boulders and break stone. As one of the few fierce corpse capable of sentience, he is also one of the few capable of thought. Unlike living humans, he did not fear pain, fire, the cold, or poison, and he could not cry. After breaking out of containment by the Lanling Jin Sect, Wen Ning fought with the chains on his wrists and ankles.
